Special Issue on Commercial Aviation and Cybersecurity

Call for Papers

Over the last several years, commercial aviation has incorporated information technology and information communication technology products throughout the National Airspace System, aircraft, airlines, and maintenance and repair operations. This allows the FAA to use Global Positioning System in place of radar and pilots to have electronic flight bags in place of paper navigational aids. But this move to digital communications also increased the opportunity for cyber attacks on commercial aviation.

This special issue of the SAE International Journal of Transportation Cybersecurity and Privacy will focus on how computer connectivity from the supply chain to aircraft to the NAS and MRO has opened commercial aviation to very concrete cyber attacks. It is a peer-reviewed opportunity for both industry and academia to present survey-based, theoretical, and experimental results of cybersecurity for commercial aviation. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Domain separation of in-system-networks from entertainment or WiFi networks on aircraft

  • Requirements for Aircraft Systems Information Security Protection 
  • Gap analysis/shortcomings/reviews of relevant commercial aviation standards
  • Special conditions addressing cybersecurity
  • Security requirements for specific and developing technologies 
  • Training requirements 
  • Reporting of cyber incidents
