Special Issue on Modern Vehicle Dynamics Control Systems

Actual automotive industry megatrends include vehicle electrification, automation, connectivity and digitalization, and automotive market globalization. These megatrends drive creation of new technologies related to drivetrain and chassis control systems as well as driver assistance and automated driving systems targeting at further improvement of energy efficiency, ride and driving comfort, and overall performance characteristics maintaining at the same necessary level of vehicle safety and security. Vehicle electrification shapes design of vehicle dynamics control systems creating a free space for the new control functions and innovative system design. Vehicle automation offers new opportunities for designing vehicle control systems by applying fusion of diverse information channels and incorporating intelligent and adaptive decision-making algorithms in the control logic. In combination with modern mechatronic and cyber-physical engineering solutions this enables new possibilities and challenges in vehicle motion control. More sophisticated system and control system architecture followed by such innovative solutions shall at the same time be compliant with the multi-market legislative requirements to safety-critical mechatronic systems by providing necessary safety and security mechanisms as well as with the requirements driven by the customer needs at each specific market. All these factors force a paradigm shift in the vehicle dynamics control systems architecture and design deriving scalable energy efficient, highly-automated, safe and secure vehicle dynamics control systems.


SAE International Journal of Vehicle Dynamics, Stability, and NVH and this special provide a peer-reviewed platform for both industry and academy to share their ideas and recent results in modern vehicle dynamics control systems supported by advanced functionalities of assisted and automated driving. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Vehicle stability control functions for automated vehicle motion control
  • Vehicle vertical dynamics control considering requirements to ride comfort for different vehicle automation levels
  • Functional safety and security of safety-critical vehicle dynamics control systems
  • Integrated vehicle dynamics and vehicle motion control for automated driving
  • Vehicle state estimation methods
  • Virtual and real test methods and procedures for validation of functionality and performance of vehicle dynamics control systems
  • Specific problems by designing vehicle dynamics control systems for automated and electrified vehicles
