SAE International Journal of Materials and Manufacturing

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Mark E. Barkey has been appointed co-Editor-in-Chief of the SAE International Journal of Materials and Manufacturing—alongside Yung-Li Lee—effective immediately.

Dr. Barkey is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Alabama, where he currently lives and works as a Professor and Head of the Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics Department at @ The University of Alabama. In his 28-year tenure there, he has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching. As a scholar, he has authored over 100 technical publications, and he has been cited more than 3500 times. His current research interest is thermo-mechanical fatigue testing of 3-D printed titanium and stainless-steel specimens for use in high-temperature applications.

With the journal having recently been granted an ISI Journal Impact Factor™ of 0.8, Mark plans to help lead the journal toward becoming the preferred venue for mobility-related materials and manufacturing research.

When asked about his vision for the journal, he explained that it goes beyond the distinction of receiving a Journal Impact Factor. Mark believes the journal’s success will be defined, in the first place, by its practical impact on the mobility industry at large. For this reason, SAE is primed to lead this effort. He has, after all, been an SAE member since 1994—when his career was just getting started.

Since then, he has noted that his relationship with SAE connected him to numerous outstanding engineers. He explained, “These engineers have helped to mentor me, provided technical contacts in the industry for both collaboration and as a source of learning new techniques and methods for analysis and design.” Mark received the SAE Forest R. McFarland Award in 2021 for outstanding contributions toward furthering the goals of SAE’s engineering events, and the Arch T. Colwell Merit Award in 2003 which recognizes authors of outstanding technical papers.

Mark closed with some guidance for early-career researchers. He emphasized the importance of selecting a journal relevant to your work, so that it reaches the correct audience. “Think of [your work’s] future publication venue as the research or method is initiated,” he wrote, “and keep a thorough record of all results, so that the latter stage of preparation for publication focuses on the over-arching premise and results of the work.”
