The Design and the Verification of the ATV Cargo Carrier Environmental Control and Life Support System and Water & Gas Delivery System 2000-01-2299

The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is a project conceived and designed to support from the logistic point of view the International Space Station (ISS) Russian Segment (RS).
The ATV is constituted by two main sections: the Spacecraft (SC) and the Integrated Cargo Carrier (ICC). The SC provides all the functions requested during the ATV flight, as for example the propulsion, the navigation control, the electrical power generation, the management of the data.
The ICC has the scope to support the docking with the ISS and to transport and deliver the dry and fluid cargoes. The ICC is composed of a habitable Pressurised Module (PM) and a non-pressurised External Module (EM).
ALENIA Spazio is responsible for the design and the integration of the ICC and for the Thermal Control System (TCS) of the complete ATV.
In the frame of the ICC, the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) is designed to provide a comfortable environment for ISS crew, in terms of pressure control, air circulation and ventilation and support to fire detection.
The Water & Gas Delivery System (W&GDS) performs the functions to transport and deliver potable water and gases (air, nitrogen and/or oxygen) requested to revitalise the ISS atmosphere, and, moreover, to be reloaded with the liquid wastes generated in the ISS.
This paper reports a description of the main aspects related to the architecture and the design solutions selected for the different ECLSS and W&GDS functions. In addition, the activities necessary to verify the compliance of the design to the requirements specific of the ECLSS and the W&GDS are defined.
