Thirty-Two Bit Embedded Microcontrollers and Semiconductors for Fuel Cell Applications in the Transportation Arena 2002-01-0104
This paper will discuss how embedded semiconductors will help solve the challenges of implementing a fuel cell powered vehicle. Thirty-two bit microcontrollers can monitor the temperature of the system and help maintain an “above freezing idle” in severe cold climates. Thermal sensing is a task that is handled by microcontrollers (and thermal sensors) in some powertrain applications today. Maintaining an optimum gas flow through fuel cell membranes is another task well suited for a 32-bit embedded microcontroller based system. Airflow is currently monitored by 32-bit systems in many internal combustion engine powertrain applications. Lastly, a 32-bit microcontroller-based system is highly suitable for effectively managing the electrical energy produced by the fuel cells.
