Development of Seating System with GMT for ECE 17.07 (Luggage Retention) Regulation 2002-01-1041

In order to meet the new European regulation ECE 17.07, automobile makers are required to prepare for a high performance seating system. This paper describes the development of a seating system with the 60:40 and 50:50 fold-down rear seat backs made of GMT (Glassfiber Mat Thermoplastic) for the ECE 17.07. GMT-RD( random mat grade) composite was used as the seat back material because of it's high strength and toughness. Through the static and dynamic structure analysis, we have optimized the seat back design including rib pattern, hinge structure, and so on. This newly developed GMT seat-back meets the above mentioned requirements with significant weight savings when compared with traditional steel seat back.
