Experimental and Numerical Approaches of Hemming: Application on Steel and Aluminum6016 2002-01-2084

In order to enhance aspect and geometrical qualities, the hemming process is being studied at PSA since 1996.
This paper focus on applied effort and roll-in results, on two different materials (steel and aluminium) with several geometries. The simulations are done with OPTRIS-SOFTWARE®.
We have 3 main standard test pieces: concave, convex, and straight. For each form, we have different radius. We can also test different flanging radius, and different flange length.
Experimental and numerical comparison underlines a good correlation on steel roll-in, and a less satisfying result on aluminum 6016. In term of effort, good correlation between experience and calculation are difficult to obtain. All these results will be discussed.
