How Object Detection/Operator-Assist Systems Can Succeed (The Story of the Largest Field Test of IVI Technology in Transit) 2002-01-3113
Safer operation holds the promise of reducing an $800 million per year transit problem. Although other transportation segments have larger problems, many go un-resolved due to: technical limitations, cost, oversimplification of collision problems, and lack of effective warning schemes. These issues have created a 20-year legacy of system failures.
However, by including the operator in the design process, systems can be more effective because: (1) overall safer operation is their concern and driver-perceptions are addressed (2) properly identified problems can be addressed by a capable technology. Lessons learned through IVI field tests should serve as important guideposts for design considerations for all vehicle types.
