CAD an Effective Tool in Reduction of Design Cycle Time - Applied to Design of AFV Transmission 2003-28-0031
Design philosophy & methodology has undergone sea change with the advent of computers. Fast changing and exponentially increasing computing power has enabled newer & newer design tools. The 1st generation was based on performance driven design requirement, which was largely manual drawings. The second-generation 2D drafting packages has enabled performance and cost based designs. The current 3D modeling software has enabled design for function, material manufacture and aesthetics.
Significant advantage of 3D solid modeling based design is drastic reduction in design cycle time and reduction in design iterations by enabling virtual simulation, prototyping and analysis. The rapid prototyping enables design validation by enabling model testing. CVRDE has effectively utilized 3D solid modeling and analysis packages along with rapid prototyping to reduce the cycle time of design in designing a compact 1400 hp automatic transmission. This paper highlights the methodology followed and the techniques used towards this objective.
