Developing a Screening Tool for NAÏVE users of Virtual Environments 2004-01-2153
The use of Virtual Environments (VE) is now becoming more and more widespread within many fields of interest; such as engineering, architecture, medical and the military to name a few. However, problems often occur due to high task complexity or simply a matter of users being unable to orientate themselves correctly, thus leading to frustration and finally a rejection of the VE system itself.
NAÏVE is a screening tool that puts the users in a narrative-based VE which tests them, without them actually knowing where and when the tests occur, in a wide spectrum of tasks that are found when using VEs. If we can identify these users beforehand who will experience difficulty within VEs, training programs could then be tailored specifically at users' weak points, perhaps focusing more on navigational aspects such as flying for example.
