Analysis of Hydrodynamic Bearing performance in IC-Engines 2004-28-0011
The design of crankshaft bearings is normally carried out with many assumptions on the theoretical and operating parameters. The three major parameters, which affect the performance of bearing in I.C. engines, are constant load, change in pressure gradient and dynamic forces of engine elements. Much importance was not given for the changes in pressure gradient and dynamic forces of flywheel, piston, crank, connecting rod, etc., in the previous studies. The present study tends to fill the gap in this regard.
The study on the variation in the pressure gradients and dynamic forces for different crank angles will throw greater light on the improved performance of the engine bearings. In addition studies on oil film thickness and wear rate, which have a considerable effect on the performance of the bearing are also being carried out. The paper focuses upon the major frictional bearing compounds of the automobile engine, that is flywheel, piston, crank, connecting rod and also on the trajectory of the shaft.
