Vibration Modes of Radial Tires: Application to Non-rolling and Rolling Events 2005-01-2526
The accurate simulation of the dynamics of the tire is a critical factor in predicting the performance of the tire/vehicle system with respect to ride, NVH, durability and ABS braking. In recent years several advanced commercial tire models have been developed for this purpose, such as FTIRE, CD-TIRE, RMOD-K and TNO-SWIFT. These models utilize tire modal data to calibrate internal parameters so that the models exhibit the proper dynamic response. Although the simulations typically involve a rolling tire, the tire modal data is typically obtained from a non-rolling condition. To address this inconsistency the effect of rolling versus non-rolling on the tire dynamics response is discussed in this paper and supported through theoretical concepts, measurement data and simulations with the tire model FTIRE. The FTIRE model is used to predict cleat impact based on different boundary conditions to demonstrate the effect of a rolling and non-rolling tire simulation. After accounting for rolling effects good correlation with experimental data is achieved.
