Analysis Methodology of Diesel Combustion by Using Flame Luminosity, Two-Colour Method and Laser-Induced Incandescence 2005-24-012

The combustion process in a hot spray test rig was studied by means of natural flame luminosity, two-colour method and laser-induced incandescence (LII). A comparison of the different techniques has been carried out based on some relevant topics related to the methodology. Thus, cycle-to-cycle variations have been analyzed by statistical procedures, in order to obtain a representative description of the flame evolution, suitable for direct analysis and comparison with CFD predictions.
A parametric study on the influence of injection pressure and in-cylinder air density on flame development has been carried out. Comparisons have been made between the KL maps from two-colour method and soot distributions from LII. Results from the different techniques have been integrated to build up a picture of the influence of these parametric variables on the soot distribution in the flame.
