Effect on Fuel Permeation Based on Changes in Seal Design 2006-01-0976
Subtle changes in either seal design or compound formulation can have an effect on fuel permeation rate. This paper will present data showing how permeation results are affected by changes in seal design and in compound formulation. Seal design looks at compression and changes in design relative to an o-ring, whereas compound formulation looks at the filler system. This paper will show whether those changes have a measurable effect on permeation. The data presented is based on using gravimetric weight loss method at 40°C using CE10 fluid. Data presented is not conclusive for all possible variations, but provides meaningful design and compound selection direction that can be applied to reduce permeation.
