Experimental Investigations on the Performance, Combustion and Emission Characteristics of alcohol blended gasoline in a Fuel Injected Spark Ignition Engine 2008-28-0068

A Wide Open Throttle (WOT) engine performance, combustion and emission characteristics of a single cylinder spark ignition engine was investigated with different ethanol blended gasoline. Three different blends low (10% Ethanol), medium (30% Ethanol) and high (70% Ethanol) ethanol-gasoline blends were investigated. The investigation was conducted on AVL single cylinder research engine with provision to measure in-cylinder, high-pressure traces for combustion analysis.
The present paper discuss the requirements to optimize various engine operating parameters such as Ignition timing, Duration of injection (DOI) etc in order to substitute maximum amount of gasoline with ethanol without doing any major modification in the existing engine hardware. The engine operating parameters were optimized with different ethanol-gasoline blends with an aim to improve the combustion and emission behavior of the engine when compared to 100% gasoline operation.
The results of investigation shows the need for optimization of fuel metering and spark advance in view of change in chemical properties of different ethanol-gasoline blends. The optimization of duration of injection and spark advance with different ethanol-gasoline blends, have resulted an improved engine performance and significant reduction in HC and CO emission as compared with 100% gasoline operation.
