V2V Communication - Analysis and Validation of Propagation Models in Real World Scenarios 2015-01-0289

Progressed efforts have been made on the development of Vehicle to Vehicle communication technology. The European Telecommunications Standard Institute has allocated a dedicated frequency band of 5.855 - 5.925 GHz to vehicular communication. Numerous on road measurement campaigns have been conducted by joint consortium to evaluate the performance of Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication around the world. However due to the scalability limitation of on road measurements, light-weight simulation tools are more widely implemented to gain general insights into Vehicle to Vehicle communication. Hence, the needs of simulation regarding evaluation on the performance of this technology have been aroused. In order to ensure the reliability of the simulation, propagation model on Vehicle to Vehicle communication should be accurate to have realistic results.
In this paper, we conducted a survey of the available propagation models in urban, suburban and highway area. Both empirically derived and physical mechanism based models have been analyzed. The validation of the proposed models is based on the measurements conducted by us in Lippstadt, Germany, which is a typical medium sized city with average traffic flows.
This paper focuses on the derivation of the path loss exponents and the validation of propagation models based on measurements conducted in Lippstadt, Germany. The applicability of the proposed models in estimating the signal propagation in this specific environment condition was discussed subsequently.
The paper summarizes different approaches implemented to estimate the propagation loss of Vehicle to Vehicle communication. Values for path loss exponents have been derived base on realistic measurement results, which can be integrated into simulation of Vehicle to Vehicle communication.
