Development of TOP TIER Diesel Standard 2019-01-0264
The TOP TIER diesel fuel standard was first established in 2017 to promote better fuel quality in marketplace to fulfill the needs of the modern diesel vehicle technologies. It provides recommended fuel specifications in addition to the local fuel standards applicable for various grades of diesel fuels to be used in modern diesel vehicles with increasing levels of emissions control. It is developed by TOP TIER diesel OEM sponsors made up of representatives of diesel auto and engine manufacturers. These specifications were developed after discussions over nearly two years with various stakeholders such as individual OEMs, members of Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA), fuel additive companies as well as fuel producers and marketers. This paper reviews the major aspects of the development of TOP TIER diesel program; implementation and challenges in adoption of the program especially in US marketplace. The paper also summarizes some of the future updates to the program and thoughts on making the program successful.
