Robust & reliable clutch release system design by introducing additional degree of freedom in clutch pedal 2019-01-0340

Customer satisfaction is a necessity for building the brand image of any organization. It can be achieved by providing best performing product with high reliability at minimum cost. Clutch release system is always one of the key targets for a designer to make it more reliable as it consists of piston cylinder assemblies with complex linkages. Therefore, either of hydraulic or pneumatic actuation, pedal load and travel is important to customer comfort. But for a designer, both are counter to each other and an optimization between them is a need. Clutch pedal system consists of clutch pedal arm, piston cylinder assembly CMC and their mounting brackets. The pedal arm travel is converted into reciprocating motion of piston considering its mechanical ratio. While actuating the pedal arm, the push rod of CMC articulates about its own hinge point. Above certain limit of articulation, CMC leakage and complete clutch release system fatigue failure may occur. Limiting the clutch pedal travel will not help as this will increase the pedal effort to release the clutch which will further lead to discomfort to driver. This paper focuses on improving the reliability of clutch pedal without compromising the pedal effort, travel & without changing the hydro- mechanical ratios. This is be achieved by increasing the degree of freedom in the clutch pedal itself which will take care of all the manufacturing & design deviations. The articulation study & physical validation results confirm the above hypothesis showing the improvement in life of the clutch pedal assembly
