Numerical analysis and optimization design of volute of centrifugal compressors in PEM fuel cell vehicles 2019-01-0376
The air compressors of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems have the characteristics of high speed and low mass flow rate with a narrow working area near the surge boundary, which are quite different from the turbochargers of internal combustion engines. However, there is little information available in literature about the volute design of centrifugal compressors. In view of the air supply characteristics for PEM fuel cells, the cross-sectional area, the cutwater and the outlet of volute are parametrically analyzed in this work to identify the optimum values. The numerical results show that the cross-sectional area has a major impact on the surge boundary of compressor, and the aerodynamic performance at high mass flow rate is greatly affected by the volute tongue.
