A non-Hertzian contact analysis for the ball and raceway of a transmission bearing 2019-01-0708
A two-dimensional non-conforming finite element analysis (FEA) is validated against the classical Hertz theory and a three-dimensional conformal FEA is further developed. Accordingly, a non-Hertzian elasto-plastic contact analysis is performed, and the results are compared with those from a pure-elastic FEA. The present numerical results indicate that once plastic yield is initiated, the pure-elastic FEA in general overestimates both the contact pressure and the subsurface stress, but underestimates the effective strain and the maximum shear strain as well as the depth of peak stress. The latter issue might be a primary factor accounting for the premature failure of the deep groove ball bearings.
