Intake & Exhaust Ports Design for Tumble & Mass Flow Rate Improvements in Gasoline Engine 2019-01-0763

In recent years, world-wide automotive industries have been continuously working in the research of suitable technical solutions to meet upcoming more and more stringent CO2 emission targets, as defined by international regulations authorities Many technologies have been already developed, or are currently under study, to attain the above objective In Spark- Ignition (SI) internal combustion engines, it is widely recognized that Intake port contributes to in-cylinder turbulence which highly influences the combustion process and exhaust port supports in reduction in RGF which all together support to the overall engine efficiency improvement. Intake Port: Turbulence generated inside combustion chamber strongly depends upon the following key parameters during the intake phase of engine: 1. Port shape 2. Port top profile angles (α & β) 3. Port side angle (γ) 4. Valve angle (θ) 5. Flow separation edge High tumble intake port Turbulence motion is support to-form high turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in-side the combustion chamber. TKE is conserved by piston bowl during compression phase of engine near spark plug area, which enhances the burning rate of charge. New intake port has been designed for 0.8L PFI gasoline engine to counter the conflicting requirement of better Tumble & MFR. Residual gas fraction reduction with better scavenging is achieved to take-care the overall engine efficiency enhancement by improving following key parameters: 1. Reduction in minimum cross section area of port 2. Smooth radius to avoid flow de-attachment 3. Reduction in valve shrouding In this work, different geometries of the intake port have been analyzed by means of 3D-CFD simulations, to foresee the in-cylinder tumble motion development and turbulence evolution during intake and compression strokes. Exhaust port also designed by performing numbers of iterations for high port flow & velocity.
