Thermal uniformity of pouch type lithium ion batteries with NCM cathode materials under different operating conditions 2019-01-1000
With the advantage of high energy density, pouch type lithium ion batteries with large capacities are found more and more applications in electric vehicles. For these large-scale batteries, thermal uniformity is vital for their safety and cycle life. Temperature gradient inside the battery cell will cause difference in degradation rate of active material in different areas, which is possible to cause early failure or even fire and explosions of the battery cell. Thus, it is necessary to illustrate the batteries' thermal uniformity in detail under different operating conditions. This work applied both the thermal imaging method and measuring with thermocouples to investigate the evolving phenomena of thermal uniformity of two pouch type NCM/C battery cells with different sizes and the same capacity. These experiment results give a better illustration on this issue and can provide information for the optimization of battery cells and design of their thermal management system.
