Modeling and Simulation of Automotive AC Components (Condenser & Piston) with Experimental Validation 2019-01-1070

Automotive Air Conditioning is the process of removing the heat and moisture from the interior of an occupied space, to improve comfort of occupants. A condenser is a device or unit used to condense refrigerant from its gaseous to its liquid state, by cooling it. In so doing, the latent heat is given up by the substance and transferred to the surrounding environment. A Condenser can be made according to numerous designs, and come in many sizes. It is made of Aluminum Alloy Material and subjected to very high internal stresses due to refrigerant pressure, thermal load and inertia load. It's also subjected to dynamic loads from engine & road vibration as AC parts are mounted on the body of the vehicle. In order to evaluate the structural integrity of the condenser assembly under these loading conditions, operating frequency should be far away from the resonance frequency and component design should be robust to sustain that much of external excitation load coming from the engine & road. The present paper describes the prediction of natural frequency of the condenser assembly via numerical method with varying tube's shell thickness under free-free condition. Then validates the same with Impact Hammer Testing. After validation, verified the same methodology on similar model under same input parameters and conditions. The comparison study is then carried out on the modal frequencies of condenser assembly through experimental and numerical methods. The comparison results exhibit a good trend and correlation, thus helping to develop a procedure to consider the tube fine thickness 'first time right' at the simulation stage.Thereafter, established the proficiency for all other components to mitigates the pre-processing time to model the tube-fins on similar models.
