Simulation on Automotive AC Compressor's Piston and Validation through UTM under Axial Load 2019-01-1073

Automotive Air Conditioning is the process of removing the heat and moisture from the interior of an occupied space, to improve comfort of occupants. A Piston is the most complex and important component in AC compressors, therefore for smooth running of compressor, piston should be in proper working condition. A Piston can be made according to numerous designs, and come in many sizes. It is made of Aluminum Alloy Material and subjected to very high coupled structural-thermal stresses. In order to evaluate the structural integrity of the piston under these loading conditions, operating frequency should be far away from the resonance frequency and component design should be robust to sustain that much cyclic pressure load. The main objective of this research work is to investigate and analyze the stress distribution on piston at actual running condition. In this paper pressure analysis and thermo-mechanical analysis is done. The parameter used for the analysis is operating gas pressure, temperature and material properties of piston. The analysis predicts the natural frequencies, von-Mises stresses and resultant displacement of the baseline and modified piston via numerical method. Then validates the same with Universal Testing Machine. The comparison study is then carried out on the modal frequencies, von-Mises stress and displacement of baseline and modified piston through experimental and numerical methods. The comparison results exhibit a good trend and correlation, thus helping to develop a procedure to consider the robust design 'first time right' at the simulation stage. Thereafter, established the proficiency for all other components to mitigates the warranty failure issues and proto making & testing costs on similar models.
