Advanced alignment and shear resistant temporary Fasteners Advances in manufacturing have enabled processes used in other industries to become commonplace in aerospace. One such example is the use of determinate assembly processes in which coordination holes are used to locate various components to each other without relying on jigs or fixtures. Even when considering the shift to robotic based manufacturing, the utility of determinate assembly is still present. Robotically manufactured sections of the airplane still need to have additional component(s) added, and these sections also have to be added to other sections. When using coordination holes, the method by which the coordination holes are aligned must be determined. One common solution is to use simple dowel pins which are inserted through the coordination holes. Another solution is to install temporary rivets through the coordination holes. Both solutions have drawbacks in that the dowel pin doesn't provide beneficial clamping forces and the temporary rivets need to be drilled out before final fastening thus wasting time and creating FOD/quality issues. This paper examines two new temporary fastener solutions that address alignment. One solution, the Censhear, offers the same alignment and similar shear strength as a dowel pin across the entire stack height while also providing significant clamping forces over a range of stack thicknesses. Imagine a temporary fastener without any flexible elements being exposed to the coordination holes through the entire stack height. A second solution, the RB-EX, provides radially expanding shank elements which maintain a solid shear section throughout the expansion range. The RB-EX fully expands to the diameters of the coordination holes while simultaneously eliminating misalignment. Both solutions can be manually or robotically installed and are reusable thus eliminating FOD while maximizing the benefits of determinate assembly.
