Cognitive VANETs secured using Blockchain: A Comprehensive Review 2019-01-1401
With the proliferation of autonomous vehicles and vehicular communication networks (VANETs), our goal of implementing fully automated roadways is ever so close to meet reality today. The need to improve the utilization performance of spectrum resources in the VANETs gets increases, as there is a surge in the number of connected vehicles on the road. Cognitive radio (CR) provides a promising result to probable spectrum-resource starvation in VANETs. Cognitive radio network enables users to strategically access the existing wireless spectrum without being meddling with the existing users. Further, the need to prepare VANETs for the major security risks and threats cannot be overemphasized. The security risks arising from safety-related operational interference in a connected vehicle environment can invariably have catastrophic outcomes. Therefore, in addition to the network performance parameters, it is also highly imperative to address the security of VANETs. Blockchain technology is inherently secure by design because of the decentralization in the network. Blockchain technology is beginning to attract the attention of network engineers in improving the security of VANETs and the medium access protocols of cognitive radios. So, in this work, we briefly discuss the different aspects of improving the backhaul network in connected vehicles and the use-cases for cognitive radios and blockchain technology in VANETs. We also discuss the unique advantages that these technologies offer in comparison with the existing technologies along with the future application trends for cognitive radio and blockchain technology in the field of connected vehicles.
