Disc brake pad grinding process development for surface flatness improvement 2019-01-1442
Surface grinding process is one of the significant processes in brake pad manufacturing, aiming for thickness accuracy according to model plan, and also for smooth and flat surface of friction material. The output that will be focused in this research is surface flatness under customers’ requirement on friction material surface quality. In an attempt to improve the flatness of the product, this work study the evaluation of surface flatness of brake pad friction material after surface grinding process with variations of input parameters such as grinder age, depth of cut, material hardness, surface area, and rotary table speed. Man-operated vertical spindle rotary table surface grinding machine is used in the experiment. Flatness after grinding process is then measured using 8-points of brake pad thickness difference method according to NAPA Premium Disc Brake Pad SOR-E requirement. The correlations between the aforementioned input parameters and the resulting surface flatness will be discussed.
