Investigation into the benefits of implementing a fully integrated MRO Software system in Airlines Maintenance and Engineering 2019-01-1908
Case studies of various MRO organizations were researched in order to gain a better understanding of the business procedures used in each department of an aircraft maintenance company. The software systems available to aid business processes were researched to understand the computer processes, functions and operational requirements of these software programs. The planning and scheduling of inventory and manpower resources is complex and requires various parameters to be computed by the software systems in order to adequately plan the necessary aircraft maintenance resources.
Case studies of aircraft maintenance companies that previously implemented integrated IT software solutions to control and monitor department functions were researched to identify and understand the various problems encountered by these companies during the software implementation phase. Understanding the problems that could potentially occur during the implementation is necessary to ensure similar mistakes are not repeated. The improvements and gains to efficiency that can be expected once the integrated IT system is operational were also considered. The work flow processes in the Brussels Airlines MRO Stores (incoming inspection) and Maintenance Planning departments was analyzed and a logical flow chart produced showing the current work procedures used in each of these departments.
A review of the software systems used in each department was documented, listing the current software system functions/purpose and identifying the operational problems that exist as a result of the lack of an integrated IT software solution in each department.
Improved work-flow procedures which should be used in each company department once the new integrated IT system implementation is complete have been displayed in diagrammatic format. With a quantification of the predicted/expected efficiency savings in terms of manpower and time saving, obtainable by implementing and integrated IT solution in the Brussels Airlines MRO company.
For the analysis on the Planning and Engineering department interface, research was conducted by using the historic data on regularly performed maintenance tasks was downloaded from the Airmad software database. Using this data the differences between the average time taken by each engineer to perform a maintenance task, and the resource planning average/time allocated by the company or manufacture to complete the maintenance tasks analyzed, was quantified. Engineer’s monthly work efficiency levels were analyzed.
