In India, ~80% to 85% market share is occupied by 19<=P<37kW, the remaining 20% to 15% by 37<=P<75kW. Therefore, mainly two segments could be specified as engine power<56kW and engine power>56kW. Introduction of Stage-V regulations brings many challenges. ~98% reduction in particulate matter and Particulate Number on top, we could try to meet Stage-V emission norm with the current engine hardware or making minimum change to current engine configuration There are different exhaust after treatment technologies like DOC+cDPF+SCR and DOC+SCRF+SCR. Passive regeneration of DPF would be one of mainstream solutions for off-highway vehicles considering safety & durability aspects. Proper dimensioning of EATS system to comply emission legislation & being transparent to operator with minimum standstill regeneration triggers. This would be done by FEV's unique tool SimEx. FEV's advance offline virtual calibration tool (VCAP) & HiL can be used to reduce test bench time overall development cost of product for OEM's. Methodology Stringent Stage-V emission regulations means a step towards clean combustion. Even though EATS (exhaust after treatment system) know-how is available globally for On-Highway applications, but it cannot be implemented as is for Off-Highways applications in Indian market due to the fact that different environmental conditions, different engine operating conditions, etc. Even if same EATS e.g. DPF, SCR are to be used, we have to have different techniques. Therefore, to meet Stage-V emission requirements, unique calibration approach would be required. Euro Stage-V solutions are under development and maybe some changes would be needed to best fit to India market in terms of cost, robustness, reduced complexity due to lack of experience of OEM's. Airpath strategies could be "closed loop" air mass sensor based or more "open loop" model based, depending on complexity & robustness to be achieved. Optimum NOX/soot and NOX/BSFC trade-offs will be considered during the combustion development to achieve tailpipe emission, target fuel consumption and proper operation of EATS. Results This study aims to recommend India specific EATS solution to meet Stage-V regulations. With the best regeneration strategy in combination with level of NOx/Soot emission of engine & mission profile will be discussed. Limitations of this study The study covers only engines 37<=P<130kW, smaller engines are not considered What does the paper offer that is new in the field including in comparison to other work by the authors? EATS validation criterion briefed is based on global experience and still considering local challenges or boundary conditions for different duty cycles. Right sizing of EATS for the specific Indian market, optimizing costs & delivery target, robustness. DPF regeneration, low cost EATS adapted for better engine performance & cleaner exhaust gas Conclusions: In India, ~80% to 85% market share occupied by off road vehicles segment in the power range of 19<=P<37kW. Introduction of Stage-V regulations brings many challenges. Since this is very cost sensitive market segment, we have well thought of this constraints & will optimize exhaust after treatment systems to meet Stage-V regulations, with focus on overall cost of the product and robustness under specific Indian boundary conditions.
