Virtual Simulation, Study of Relative Sensitive Parameters and Correlation with Physical Test of Truck Cabin Door Slam Test 2019-26-0275

Door slam test is one of the important durability test in door design and development. Door require to meet performance parameters like it should close properly (no metal to metal contact), there should not be any leakage, closing operation should be smooth & with minimal effort, it should survive the life of the vehicle. Virtual simulation of door slam test, correlation with physical test results and effect of various parameters like seal stiffness is demonstrated in this study. Door Slam Analysis is carried out in the solver LS-Dyna before physical test. This not only helped us in avoiding the initial design flaws, but supported in deciding door latch position, effect of mass distribution in the door and the study of force distribution in Primary seal, Secondary seal and door latch. Looking at the complexity of the analysis, achieving good results with logical energy balance were difficult. Primary and secondary seals played a critical role in the analysis. An intended length of both the seals was tested first to get its stiffness curve and then modeled with beam elements in the way that stiffness of one beam represented the stiffness of testing length. The Latch was also modeled with beams to keep it simple so that its locking distance could be changed which was needed for force distribution study. An in-house developed physical test was carried out for the intended cycles. A good correlation between simulation and test results is achieved. Thus this detailed study of door slam test, simulation methodology and effect of various relative parameters on performance has become very important step in design and development of door assembly.
