Numerical Analysis of Different Design Iterations of a Brake Disk 2020-01-5215

Brake systems mainly work on the principle of friction that occurs between the disk rotor and the brake pad. When the brake is applied, an incompressible fluid travels from the master cylinder of the brake system to the brake pads, which in turn come in contact with the brake disk rotors. This contact between the disk rotor and the brake pad generates a tremendous amount of heat due to the irregularities in the surfaces of the disk rotor and brake pad. For a brake system to operate at an optimum performance level, the temperatures of the disk rotor need to be in an optimum functioning range. If the brake rotor goes below or above the optimum functioning temperature range, the chances of the brake failure increase due to either component failure or lack of friction. Hence, this thesis aims to study the design theories and heat analysis of plain, slotted, and dimpled brake rotors and provide solutions for a higher convective rate for brake disk rotor designs.
