The marine industry is entering a period in which a critical evaluation of ship design and operating techniques is required if we are to meet the ever increasing threat of foreign competition and competing modes to improve plant efficiency, but we must turn our attention from getting the most out of each Btu per pound of oil and strive to get the most out of each man. This paper deals with automation and integration of propulsion plants as a means of reducing the manning requirements.
