A major increase in safety and reliability is required in many of today's applications of aircraft stability augmentation and/or automatic flight control equipment over that which can be provided by non-redundant and some dual-type systems. Among those operations which require high degrees of reliability are automatic landing on airfield or carrier, automatic terrain-following systems and stabilityaugmentation systems where loss of stability augmentation results in an unsafe condition.
To provide this major increase in safety and reliability, a redundant control system which has unde-graded performance after the first fault is required. This paper describes the application of triple redundancy with majority logic voting in meeting this requirement.
