Aerodynamic Design of the DC-9 Wing and High-Lift System 670846

The aerodynamic design and development of the wing and high lift system for the DC-9 family of short-to-medium range jet transports are reviewed.
Preliminary design methods used to establish major wing features such as area, sweep, average thickness, and taper are discussed as well as the more detailed design procedures.
Correlation of final flight test data on the Series 30 with early estimates show that, for the DC-9 wing and high lift system, the available methods resulted in a design that met all aerodynamic criteria established during the early design phase.
