In 1965, Congress authorized the Federal Government to undertake a $3 million, three-year study to determine the feasibility of an auto-ferry service in this country. (Such auto-on-train service has been operating in Europe successfully for many years.)
Auto-Train is the innovator of present auto-ferry or auto-on-train service in this country. This paper describes the concept, history, and development of Auto-Train.
