The impact loading of an occupant during crash conditions can be significantly reduced by absorbing a portion of the impact energy within the restraint system. A new energy absorbing device has been developed which is incorporated into the tension-type restraint system itself and provides an efficient method for passenger restraint while effectively reducing the acceleration.
