A Study of the Reduction of Pass-By Noise Emitted By Light Duty Trucks 785095

For the purpose of protecting man's environment, we are directing efforts toward reducing noise produced by individual vehicles. In the first stage of our study, the factors composing pass-by noise emitted by small commercial vehicles were clarified. These included the contribution ratio of each noise source, the effects of vehicle configuration, and noise propagation characteristics. As a result of testing, engine noise proved to be the main noise source. Vehicles having side body area opening to the outside, and cabover trucks were considered disadvantageous in body configuration. More desirable were conventional "bonnet-type" vehicles. We conducted the examinations of noise propagation characteristics through both experimentation and theoretical analysis. Based on these analyses, a great reduction in pass-by noise was achieved through reducing the noise of each source, and by altering the open area of the body side, without detracting from vehicle performance. We further established a method for simulating pass-by noise, including frequency characteristics
