Development of a New Cold Filterability Test for Automotive Diesel Fuels 821234

A new laboratory test, the Cold Filterability Index (CFI), has been developed to measure the low temperature filterability of automotive diesel fuels. The following continuous variables were investigated: sample initial temperature, final test temperature, rate of chilling of the sample, pressure applied to the filter assembly, time held at the lowest temperature, and volume of sample. Within the limits investigated, only the final test temperature was found to significantly affect the outcome of the CFI test.
The test procedure is of short time duration and has good repeatability as compared to current state-of-the-art methods. Results of the CFI test have been found to correlate well with the Low Temperature Filterability Test (LTFT).
