Combustion Chamber Design for Improved Performance and Economy with High Compression Lean Burn Operation 830336

Further investigations of compact chamber high compression lean burn gasoline engines performance were undertaken, and involved exploration of the possibility of improving engine knock resistance when operating at a compression ratio of 13:1.
The studies show the importance of location of the combustion chamber in the cylinder head and the design concept to create a strong swirling air movement to provide high performance and efficiency. Comparison is made between the basic low compression engine and the high compression designs, and economy and performance gains are demonstrated.
