The challenge of producing an attractive, easy to read presentation to the driver is one that faces ail automotive instrumentation designers. In a system utilizing liquid crystal displays, appearance is influenced by graphics design, color, lighting source, lighting techniques and transflector and polarizer selection. Given today's technology, a “best balance” may be achieved by a systems approach which considers the trade-offs associated with the above variables in an automotive environment. This paper describes such an approach.
