A new radiator for the Freightliner Class VIII Conventional and COE has been developed by Freightliner Corporation and McCord Heat Transfer Corporation, a subsidiary of Ex-Cell-O Corporation. One of the most important design features of the new radiator is the use of stainless steel for the tanks, hence the name Stainless Steel Tank Radiator or SST Radiator.
The primary design objectives for the SST Radiator were reduced cost, improved durability and versatility. Versatility was necessary so the radiator could be used in a variety of vehicles and with traditional and cold charge air cooling systems. The selection of configuration and materials played key roles in achieving the objectives.
This paper will deal with the design, development, testing and production implementation of the Freightliner SST Radiator.
