Secondary Power Generation System Considerations for Advanced Aircraft 841604
The importance and complexity of secondary power in aircraft design is increasing as more sophisticated air vehicles are developed. Secondary power system selection is no longer a simple or straightforward task. This paper provides information for aircraft designers charged with the task of defining secondary power systems for advanced military aircraft. Specifically, the information is in the form of (1) a general approach methodology, and (2) a sharing of experience gained through accomplishment of such tasks. Addressed are a technical approach that includes the elements of mission, baseline aircraft, information sources, requirements, hardware concepts, and evaluation and selection. Both peacetime and wartime implications are considered. Included is a generalized example of a power generation selection trade study that was actually performed for a single engine fighter aircraft.
