Design for Manufacturability: Computer-Integrated Design and Manufacturing for Product Development 851587

American industry has suffered a significant loss of market share to foreign competition over the past several decades. Some experts claim the U.S. may never achieve that prominence again. But, there is a way for our industry to recover, and possibly go ahead, by applying computer technology in the product development process.
The approach we are beginning to apply is to computer simulate both the design analysis and the manufacturing process in parallel; and early on when the problems are less constrained and more amenable to optimization.
This paper describes this concept and demonstrates its success through example applications.
