The report reviews the United States safety environment since 1982. The focus on safety belt legislation and drunk driving awareness has decreased accident fatalities. Key areas outlined include crashworthiness research, side and frontal protection, biomechanics, airbags, crash avoidance research, lighting and visibility, heavy duty vehicle research, handling and stability, vehicle safety standards and international harmonization of motor vehicle safety standards.
