Electrochemical Metallizing (High Speed Selective Plating) has been widely used in aircraft maintenance, but unfortunately primarily for corrosion resistant Cadmium LHE. One reason for this myopic limitation is the fear that operating personnel, using manual techniques, could not realize consistent engineering results. A second is lack of practical shop training.This paper describes recent procedures to overcome these limitations: 1) CHOICE OF WORK: Selection of components for which Electrochemical Metallizing is the preferred resizing procedure. 2) SOLUTION SELECTION: Analyzing the conditions under which components operate to determine the preferred solution. 3) “FLOW CHART”: Preparation of “flow charts” for each component--charts which detail all parameters and remain a permanent record. 4) OPERATOR’S “WORK SHEET”: Preparing an operator’s “work sheet” outlining all steps. 5) TOOLING: Designing special anodes and devices to shorten repair time. 6) MECHANIZATION: Engineering modern rotating, holding, reciprocating, pumping and filtration systems. 7) ELECTRONIC CONTROLS: Selection of recently developed electronic devices (e.g. Microprocessors) for precise control. 8) TRAINING PROGRAMS: Thorough training of personnel, including practical workshop experience.In summary, this paper shows how to convert your “brush plater” to an engineering tool--a system for restoring valuable components with repeatable results.
