A New Dynamic Combustion Engine Test Stand with Real-Time Simulation of the Vehicle Drive Line 870085

The dynamic engine test stand is a new tool to develop engines and engine controls. It substantially reduces the need to install the engine in prototype vehicles and perform road tests. Correct engine loading during transient operations as encountered in actual vehicles is made possible with the presented control concept, its high dynamic response and excellent system stability.
The paper compares the drive line simulation with conventional engine test stands. The principle of real-time simulation of the vehicle's spring-mass is explained using mathematical models and functional block diagrams. The paper presents criteria used in choosing the selected design and demonstrates results from test stands in commercial operation.
