The Development of a Semi-Automated Radio Test System 870091

A computer controlled radio test station was assembled to meet the demands of compressed product development schedules and establish standard test methods with data presentations. Personal computers with advanced output devices plus the availability of intelligent instrumentation enabled efficient implementation of the desired test routines. The automated testing station delivered accuracy, repeatability, and increased productivity.
The project commenced with a Feasibility study for computerizing the existing radio test procedures. This was necessary to assure satisfactory emulation of manual testing. Review of existing purchased radio test software did not yield a satisfactory package which would meet laboratory criteria. A software engineer was necessary to efficiently construct the test methods.
Based upon existing criteria necessary for test sequences, the search for a controller and test instruments began. Instrument specifications and equipment compatibility were studied for optimum station configuration. All major instruments were laboratory evaluated to assure manufacturers' claims. The completed automated test system was a successful new tool with increased accuracy, realizing repeatable test data, and productivity gains.
