Development of High Performance Engine for Passenger Cars 912469

A high performance engine for passenger oars was developed and introduced in June, 1991, by installing it on a passenger car model named “Corolla” for the Japanese market. This engine is an upgraded version of a previous 4A-GE engine with major modifications. The power of 73.5kw/liter is attained without supercharger, which is at the top level in the world for a mass production sporty engine of 1.6 liter displacement. Moreover, the power in the high speed range is increased, and the torque in the low to medium speed range is also increased, which is a crucial requirement for passenger cars in relation to urban driving. This paper will introduce various technologies used in this engine that have increased the power while reducing the noise level.
