Capacitive Acceleration Sensor for Vehicle Applications 942260

A low g acceleration sensor, developed for new vehicle control systems such as anti-lock braking (ABS), traction control, smart suspension, four-wheel steering, inclination, and misfire detection, is presented. Demand for improved vehicle system performance has increased the need for more accurate and reliable sensors. A combination of robust packaging, custom surface-mounted electronics, and metal beam capacitive sensing yields a cost-effective sensor suitable for these emerging vehicle systems. Integration of several basic production proven technologies has resulted in a novel sensor design capable of DC response and accurate operation over a wide temperature range. This paper describes the application, design, and performance of the sensor.
