Sequential Regeneration System for Diesel Particulate Traps with an Intelligent, Self-learning Control Management 962470

For the reason of environmental and health protection, future Diesel emission legislation will become increasingly severe.
Ceramic honeycomb traps are well suited to efficiently reduce particulate emissions. Several of such filtering devices have been introduced, but the major problem of regenerating the trap regarding reliability and failsafe operation is not yet sufficiently solved.
This paper describes a particulate trap system with a self supporting, sequential regeneration system. The regeneration of the collected soot inside the channels of the honeycomb trap during vehicle opertion is initiated by ignition of the soot layer using meander shaped heat wires installed in the front end of the trap inlet channels.
Particulate emissions of identical Diesel engines depend on several different parameters engines in vehicle opertion, for example engine condition (mileage), vehicle operation conditions (loaded/unloaded), engine operation conditions (accelaration phases, deceleration phases, idling phases) etc. Beside this, particulate composition largely effects regeneration quality. Some of the parameters mentioned before can not be taken into consideration in an easy way for a control algorithm, because some of them are accidental and uncontrolable.
To consider this, a regeneration control unit managed by a micro processor was developed for the modular particulate trap system with sequential trap regeneration. The parameter for initiating a regeneration are self-adjusted by an intelligent, self-learning control algorithm.
The modular set-up of the system provides a maximum flexibility for several applications (e.g. city buses, garbage trucks, delivery services, fork lift trucks, passenger cars etc.). The intelligent, self learning control system is suited to enable fail safe operation in a wide range considering changing operation conditions.
The system was tested on a city bus engine in steady state and transient operation simulating real operation of a city bus in Seoul/Korea.
Based on the results of the city bus the system was developed for application on a light duty garbage truck. The system is presently tested in a field test in Seoul/Korea.
